Messy Mates Social Club is a monthly clay gathering that welcomes anyone curious about ceramics—whether you’re shaping clay for the first time or have been making for years. There’s no pressure, no polished end goals—just a relaxed space where creativity flows, hands get dirty, and people come together to make and connect.
Each session offers a chance to explore handbuilding techniques like kurinuki, experiment with texture and form, and enjoy the freedom of creating with your hands. We keep things playful and open-ended—because here, it’s not about making perfect pottery. It’s about the joy of the process, the surprise of the unexpected, and the quiet satisfaction of creating something real.
Our aim is to hold space for anyone in Singapore looking for a creative outlet, a sense of calm, or a spark of inspiration. Whether you’re here to unwind after a long week, discover a new hobby, or simply meet like-minded people, you’ll find a seat at the table—and maybe a little clay under your nails.
Our sessions are not just about clay — they’re about building something together, one connection at a time. Messy Mates is participatory, but entirely low-pressure. Come ready to play, reflect, collaborate—or just enjoy being in a room filled with creativity. No matter your pace or experience, you belong here.
Vol 1. Kurinuki Handbuilding | 28th June 2025 | 3pm to 5pm
Workshop Description
Come unplug, get your hands dirty, and experience the calming chaos of kurinuki — a traditional Japanese pottery technique where you carve a vessel from a solid block of clay. No pottery wheel, no pressure, just pure handbuilding fun. In this laid-back session, you’ll learn how to sculpt your own one-of-a-kind piece — whether it turns out to be a cup, bowl, or something entirely unique is totally up to you.
This community-based workshop is beginner-friendly, designed to help you slow down, explore creativity, and connect with clay in an unfiltered, hands-on way.
Workshop Outline
- A short intro to the art and history of kurinuki
- Handbuilding demonstration & familiarisation with tools
- Guided shaping and carving of your own clay block
- Free exploration time to experiment with form and texture
- Optional add-ons for glazing or additional clay work (details below)
Takeaways
While you won’t be bringing your clay piece home right away, you’ll leave with clay-covered hands, a calm mind, and maybe even a few new friends. You’ll gain hands-on experience, a new skill, and the simple joy of shaping something with your own two hands.
If you choose to have your piece glazed and fired, it will be ready for collection at a later date (charges apply). Otherwise, your clay will be recycled and given a new life in someone else’s creation.
Optional Add-Ons
Glaze & Firing Service: $20 for transparent glaze / $35 for coloured glaze
Extra Clay: $10 per clay ball to work with

To Note
You’re welcome to bring your own drinks, but please refrain from bringing food or valuables. For the best hands-on experience, keep your nails short — it helps with clay control. Aprons are provided, but you’re encouraged to wear comfortable, casual clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Latecomers may miss the demonstration, which will not be repeated. Please arrive at least 5 minutes early. Upon arrival, kindly remove your shoes at the first floor and switch into our provided studio slippers before heading upstairs. Photos and videos may be taken during the event for documentation and promotional purposes. By attending, you consent to the use of these visuals by our team across social media and other platforms.
